December focus: "Unity in the Workplace", the 12th (and final) people skill from our Super Supervisor video series.

Ever been a member of a good team and experience the great feeling of Unity and Good Will that prevails?????........... Sort of like the feeling you get when hearing the star spangled banner............those who have felt it know there is nothing else quite like it.

Teams or countries with unity can reign on, while those without it will fail.

History has many examples where underdog armies defeated larger and more talented foes by being united and committed. About 3000 years ago, for example, a mild mannered group of Athenian olive farmers, were threatened by Persia, then the most powerful warrior nation in the world. The frightened citizens of Athens united to form the world's first democracy and trained and prepared for the Persian attack..............ultimately they defeated a much larger, better equipped and experienced army. The same can be true in the business world.

World class manufacturers like Toyota and others have learned to cultivate the feeling of unity and good will in the workplace to fuel the "worker inspired" improvements that drive their operational excellence and bottom line.

In this issue, Mildred reminds us that "Harmony oils the wheels of industry, while friction puts sand in the gearbox." She offers five super supervising tips for establishing and maintaining unity in the workplace.

A LAUGH : ...."Only 3 Parachutes"

Plane about to crash with 4 people on board and only 3 parachutes.....

1st man, "I am a heart surgeon and my patients need me". So he took a parachute and jumps.

2nd man, "I am a rocket scientist and probably the smartest man in the world, so the world needs me". He also took a parachute and jumped.

The two people left was an old man and a 14 year old boy scout.

Old man, "I am an old man, son, and have lived my life and you are just a lad.....you take the last parachute".

Boy, "Oh, it's alright, we still have 2 parachutes......The smartest man in the world just jumped with my back pack!

Husband and wife talking:

Wife - "What do you like best about me, my brilliant mind, my ravishing body, or my wonderful personality"?

Husband - "The thing I like best is your unlimited imagination"!

Thought for day:

Mirrors don't lie and fortunately, they don't laugh either!

LESSON: "The Feeling of UN ITY....... How to get it and keep it"

The feeling of Unity

Members of a work team are like members of a human body..........the right arm can't "goof off" without effecting the whole body. Every single part is important and should be cared for.

The best way for supervisors to create a true sense of unity is through "fair" or equal treatment of employees. A person is not likely to feel "unity" with someone they don't feel equal to.

What bosses consider fair and what employees call fair are often not the same. Employees may be on different levels in looks, dress, job performance, ambition, and social graces, but they are all on the same level in their desires and expectation of equal treatment from the boss. Each employee should have equal value in the supervisors eyes because what he or she lacks in one area, they will make up for in others. Here are some tips that will help:

Five Super Supervisor's attitudes and behaviors that help promote unity in the workplace.

1. Have no favorites on the job. Use the same tone of voice with everyone. Be interested in but not involved with, any of them.

2. Be friendly and approachable to every team member.

3. Don't hold a grudge. Let go of the past and do not hold resentment...............they can read it on your face.

4. You can rule with an iron hand but keep a soft glove on it.

5. Make everyone feel important......They ARE!


United in confidence in ourselves and each other.

Never give up mind set

Improvement in every department "continually"

Total commitment to the team's success.

Yesterdays mistake.......gone and forgotten.


A BLESSING: "United We Stand!"

This little poem summarizes my feelings about unity in the workplace.

United We Stand (from the Super Supervisor 2)

"United we stand - divided we fall" that's a statement we often may hear.
When applied to the labor/management house, the message today is quite clear.

For most of the programs and plans of the past that were used in employee relations, have become obsolete in this enlightened era of technology and education.

Those old outdated employment policies where workers were prodded and pressed, produced adversarial relationships and nobody was doing their best.

Today labor and management are walking in step with allegiance and loyalty.
Proud and productive we are charting a course that decides what our future will be.

Great success is elusive, never guaranteed, to achieve it requires many things.
But the greatest of these is the "Will to Win" that we get when we work as a team.

Yes we're Labor and Management investing our skills, our energy and years of our lives.
We receive the satisfaction and the mutual rewards of a prosperous enterprise.

When we're shoulder to shoulder, we're the best we can be. On this closeness our victory depends. For we must have a caring, cooperative spirit, or we may not be able to win.

It's United we move on to greater endeavors, It's United that we grow and we build. Only Unity provides the competitive edge, that can make us the best in our field.

So we go forward "together" or we may not go at all, our future is in our own hands.
United we'll make it .....for the alternative is "A divided house can not stand".
