A LAUGH : ...."Mohammad Ali learns the light touch"

Mohammed Ali traveling in a plane and refused to fasten his seat belt. Every time the flight attendant approached him about it he would growl, "I'm Superman, Superman don't need no seat belt!". Finally, the flight attendant reported it to the pilot, and he spoke over the intercom. "I can't move this airplane until everyone has buckled their seat belt so do it now!" The attendant went back to Mr Ali, and he still didn't have his seat belt buckled. Angrily, she got down in his face and pointed her finger at him and said, "Sir, I know you are Mohammed Ali, and a famous person, but you have to buckle your seat belt now!" Mohammed said again, "I'm Superman and Superman don't need no seatbelt!" at this point the Stewardess replied, "Sir, Superman don't need no airplane!" Sometimes I tell my seminar audiences that just because they are a boss, that don't make them Superman. Employees expect Supervisors and managers to live by the same rules they set for everyone else.

LESSON: "Blessing Your Employees With The Light Touch"

Can you ebb and flow like the ocean?

Managing other people can be stressful, so you have to learn to mimic the ocean. It flows and then it ebbs.....then it flows....and then it ebbs. It can't flow all the time and neither can you! If you don't learn to ebb, mother nature will do it for you! You will have a stroke, heart attack or accident........... so use the light touch every day on the job (and do the same thing at home). Here are some tips.

8 tips for applying the "light touch":

1. Every situation has two handles.....a heavy one and a light one. Take it by the light one supervisors and managers, and you will not only bless your people but yourself as well.

2. Learn to let the "little" things go. Psychiatrists have observed that your emotional stability can be measured by the number of things you can let go. Don't sweat the small stuff.......and remember......it's all small stuff.

3. Any word of discipline or correction must be said with kindness and more importantly in private.

4. Temper your discipline with mercy and common sense and give your employees the benefit of the doubt.

5. When you have to tell employees something they have done wrong, start by telling them something they have done right. (Soften the blow).

6. Never explode on an employee. Lose your temper and you will lose your case!

7. Make yourself approachable and available. Remember supervisors and managers......you are not cops, you are coaches......and we are a team, here, aren't we?

8. Quit worrying. Worry is a man with a bended head carrying a load of feathers that he thinks is lead.

A BLESSING: "Impossible Things Can be Done With the Light Touch"

Here is a little poem I learned years ago about impossible and magical things can be done with the light touch.

It Couldn't Be Done by Edgar A. Guest

"Somebody said that it couldn't be done, but he with a chuckle replied. Well"maybe it couldn't," but he would be one who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed; "Oh, you'll never do that; at least no one ever has done it", But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, and the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, without any doubting or quibbling, He started to sing as he tackled the thing, that couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, there are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, the dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle right in with a bit of a grin, just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing that cannot be done, and you'll do it!"

Lighten up folks......LIGHTEN UP! At the end of the day, you may find that impossible and magical things have been accomplished.
