Consciously or unconsciously we all judge people by the way they look and the way they act.......a fact of life. This is especially true for persons in a supervisory or management position. When a supervisor comes on the job he or she makes two statements to their workers before they have spoken the first word........We will review these nonverbal statements and how a Super Supervisor can make them positive.

A LAUGH : ...."Singing on her wedding night"

There was this nice looking woman in the church choir who was a soloist. She really had a beautiful and wonderful voice that everyone raved about. A man in the church started dating her and he told her "I'd marry you just to hear you sing". Sure enough, they got married. On the wedding night they started to retire and she took off her wig...He blinked.....then she took out her hearing aid........his eyes widened....she took out her false teeth and laid her contact lens on the table.....he said "Start singing woman!!!!!"


Looking like a leader

LESSON:"Looking like leader and acting like a winner"

(from SuperSupervisor 2, People Skill 1)

Effective leaders realize that they make their two most important statements every day before speaking the first word. Their attitude makes a statement , they need to act like a winner. Nobody does their best work for a loser. Their appearance makes another statement, they need to look like a leader. Every other statement you make during the day will be enhanced or diminished by these two statement so lets review them in more detail.

1. Attitude A salesman must impress or "Sell himself" to the prospect, before he sells his product. The Store keeper will make this same silent statement to his customers before they decide on the purchase. Likewise, the Boss's attitude must inspire the workers positively before the desired response is achieved. Remember enthusiasm in not taught, it's caught........the boss must maintain an up beat and positive attitude.

2. Appearance! Also the Boss's appearance must impress their employees. In my book "The Super Supervisor", I tell supervisors and managers not to come to work looking like they spent the night upside down in a post hole, with furrowed brow, stooped shoulders, gas on their stomachs and tired blood. This is a comical attempt to send a "wake up call" to those in management who may still be a little careless. In addition to being clean and neat, two great ways to improve your appearance more than anything else is simply to smile often and use good posture.......and it won't cost you a dime.

Today's workforce is the most educated, sophisticated, and liberated in the history of the world. They expect more from managers and supervisors than orders for the day......much more. The boss' neat appearance will impress them. His or her confidence will interest them and their positive attitude will inspire them....EVERYBODY WINS. So look like a leader....clean and neat. Act like a winner.....confident and positive. These are absolute requirements for motivating other people......

Start the day off right!. Here is a suggestion that might help you remember this lesson. Before entering the door to your office or plant in the morning (or for that matter the door to you house) pause to reflect on your attitude and appearance.....and then pull your sholders back, stand up straight and walk through the door with a smile on you face and a spring in you step and a determination to bless the people in your world with kindness and courtesy.

 


A BLESSING:

"Smile"

No matter how bad you are feeling, they say that a smile is quite healing, it grows in a wreath around you teeth and keeps you face from congealing.

It's not just your appraisal of other people that is important, but also your appraisal of yourself, illustrated by this wonderful poem by Dale Wimbrow.

"The Man in the Glass"

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one starring back from the glass.

He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest.
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed the most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years.
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be the heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.

WE GOT MAIL......From You! Email from a Mildred live class participant who learned to put his personal problems in the dumpster.

Mildred, I cannot describe how much our workforce enjoyed your presentation...here is an example from one of our most negative employee who said....."you know that woman made a lot of sense if someone listened to her....and I did. What she said about dumping your personal problems in that dumpster outside the gate before you come to work and not taking it out on you co-workers is right." He then began to apologize to me about a negative encounter he had with me the day before the presentation.......I was stunned. Mildred, out of all the employees that work in this plant, he was the last one I would have expected to hear what you said and be touched. I had a wonderful opportunity to talk with him further on some things. I told him I keep a copy of your tape in my car and when I get in a bad mood or am feeling blue, I will put it in and listen to it. He then said, "how about getting me one of these tapes." He told me the next time I saw him with a sour look on his face to remind him to smile.....Enclosed is my order for 60 tapes. As I told you when you were here....I know God has rewarded you on earth for your wonderful, unselfish works, but I know he must have a special place designated just for Mildred Ramsey in heaven. the ability you have to touch people's lives is remakable.....very truly yours....an HR manager for a large steel mill in Alabama.
