It's not what we had when we were ten years old but.....It's what we didn't have that motivates us as adults. We spend the rest of our lives searching for things we did not have when we were ten.........amazing!

Supervisors need to change the way they manage because the people they manage have changed!!
Psychiatrists tell us, our personality is pretty much locked in by the age of ten and what motivates us as adults is determined not by what we had when we were ten years old but.....It's what we didn't have!.
Older people who are now leaving the work force were raised in tough economic times and what they didn't have was money. You can motivate these folks with money. What they did have, however, was a stable family life and emotional support. Most mothers stayed at home and had a hot cooked meal waiting for them when they got home from school. Give these folks a regular pay check and a week off on the fourth of July and you could pretty much manage them anyway you wanted.
Younger folks and most of the people you will be supervising for the rest of your career are different. Statistics show that many of the young people in the workforce today come from broken homes.......and homes where both parents worked..........they had money when they were ten, but what they didn't have was emotional support and that is what will motivates them as adults.
How can supervisors give this emotional support needed by so many of their workers without getting involved with them ?????
The best way is simply to demonstrate that you CARE about them..........and show them some appreciation. The story in the blessing below is one example of how to do this.
A true story
When a supervisor does something that says they"care" about a person, that will be a S.E.E. that will motivate and activate them in a positive eway.....Here's proof
On time I was in Decatur, Alabama training for a great company. At the break one of the supervisors approached me and said, "Ms Ramsey, What you said about caring is true", and he told me this story. "I had a young man working for me that I could not motivate to save my life. I knew he was capable of doing a top job but I could not get him to do it no matter what I did. "Ms Ramsey", he said, "I tried everything in the book on him and nothing worked. I was about ready to give up on him, but a while back his grandmother died (my own grandmother had died recently), so one morning I went over to the boy's house. I told him about my grandmother, how much I loved her and how badly I missed her. I told him I knew how he felt and to take as much time off as he needed and I would see him later." Ms Ramsey, he continued, "I attended the funeral and sent a small flower.....When he came back to work you wouldn't have known he was the same person. He is giving me top job performance on a continuing basis, he is doing the work I knew he could do all along".
So you see, management team, after everything in the book failed, the supervisor showed he cared about him, the boy went to work!
It will be the "Significant Emotional Encounters" with your team that will prove you care about them and change their performance form mediocre to magnificent.
Love,
PS My SuperSupervisor book if full of true stories about the power of caring, and Significant Emotional Encounters.
From the executive VP of a large Trucking Company...... The attendees of your Super Supervisor seminar are still talking about your presentations. They all enjoyed your "down to earth" approach and the fact that you were speaking from experience and not just giving them a load of theory. Some of them are scurrying around to mend relationships so that there is no "pee pee in the coffee"........I am enclosing the evaluation of your presentation...the rating of 9.59 (on a basis of 10) is extremely high and indicates the positive feelings of the attendees.
