A Mildred Moment.................

A LAUGH : ..........Mis...Communication

  • An elderly couple sitting on the porch one night.....

Old man, "After all these years, I have found you to be tried and true."

    Nearly deaf wife, "What?????".

Old Man, louder, "After all these years, I have found you tried and true."

    Woman, "What!!?????"

Man very loud-"I SAID AFTER ALL THESE YEARS I HAVE FOUND YOU TRIED AND TRUE".

Woman-"Well after all these years I'm getting pretty tired of you too!!!
  • A 92 year old man went to the Doctor for an examinaton......The next day the doctor met him on the street with a tall buxom blonde on his arm......Dr., "Man, what are you doing??" The old man replied, "I'm doing what you told me".

    "What!!??" cried the doctor.

"You told me to get a hot mama and be carefree", answered the old man.

"No, No!", exclaimed the doctor, "I told you, you have a heart murmur, to be careful!"

A LESSON "Communication is an exchange .....here are a few tips.

Positive Communication is and exchange that requires:

1. Good talking skills (do they respond to what you are saying?)

2. Good listening skills (do you understand what they said?)

Did you know all your employees are wearing an invisible sign around their necks. MAKE ME FEEL IMPORTANT

(from The Super Supervisor book and Seminar)...."The reason so many supervisors and managers have trouble communicating with their employees is - They have forgotten the meaning of the word. Communication is an EXCHANGE of ideas, thoughts and suggestions....emphasis on "exchange". The purpose of communication is to get cooperation and the first rule of cooperation is Listening. If you tell an employee to do something and they do it. That's not cooperation.....That's dictation, and that's the method most managers like.......(and use). Normal conversation should have about equal amounts of talking and listening. Take note of your most recent discussions with your workers and if you talked most of the time, you may need to do more listening.

Listening tips: How important is "Listening?"A 23 year old organizer for the teamsters union was having phenomenal results in North Carolina a few years ago. She won three elections one right after the other. Many companies were stunned, and someone asked her "What is the secret of your success?" and she replied, "I listened". All she had to do was drive up to the gate and sit on the hood of her car, listen to the employees and sign them up. Management team, if you don't have time to listen to your employees once in awhile, there is someone who does...................

Talking Tips: The answer to good communication is under your nose. What comes out of your mouth, what doesn't come out and the way it comes out. Every time you communicate with anyone in your world, you get one of two things. To some degree you get response...... or reaction............depending not upon the other person, but depending upon the way you approached them.

Everyone will respond to a positive approach, everyone will react to a negative approach. Basically this is all you need to know about communication......end of lesson.

A BLESSING: Powerful Quotes from the "Power of Positive Thinking" and "As A Man Thinketh" booklets.

A word on getting folks to respond to you from "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale (pg 48).

"Whomever you help to build up and become a better, stronger, finer person will give you his undying devotion. Do it unselfishly. Do it because you like them and because you see possibilities in them......Build people up and love them genuinely....and their esteem and affection will flow back toward you."

Advice on making your dreams come true from James Allen's "As a Man Thinketh" (pg 26).

"Cherish your visions, cherish your ideals; cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you remain true to them, your world will at last be built."

2. Super Supervisor learns to dump his problems at the door

Dear Mildred,

I cannot adequately describe to you how much our workforce enjoyed your presentation. I am still receiving phone calls and hearing comments from our people thanking us for bringing you to them. I want to share one special encounter with you. A few days after your visit one of our most negative employees came to see me. He said he had to get something straight with me. My first reaction was that he was getting ready to let me have it for bringing a preacher in to talk to them. Much to my surprise, he said, "You know, that woman over there made a lot of sense if someone listened to her ... and I did. What she said about dumping your personal problems in that dumpster outside the gate before you come to work and not taking it out on your co-workers is right." He then began to apologize to me for an negative encounter he had with me at the Holiday Inn on the day of your presentation. He had made a very sarcastic remark to me as he came in. He asked me to forgive him for acting like that. I was stunned. Mildred, out of all the employees that work in this plant, he was the last one I would have expected to hear what you said and to be touched. I had a wonderful opportunity to talk with him further about some other things. I told him that I keep a copy of your tape in my car and when I get in a bad mood or am feeling a little blue, I will put it in and listen to it. He then said, 'how about getting me one of those tapes.' He told me the next time I see him with a sour look on his face to remind him to smile. Needless to say, that encounter with him will go down as one of the most memorable moments of my job. That one conversation with him was
i worth it all.

It is my hope that we will be able to have you back to visit again at some time in the future. As I told you when you were here, I know that God has rewarded you on earth for your wonderful, unselfish works, but I know that He has a very special place designated just for Mildred Ramsey in Heaven. The ability you have to touch peoples' lives is remarkable. Take care of yourself and I hope to talk with you soon.
Very truly yours,

HR Director for a large steel manufacturer
