A laugh, A lesson, and A blessing from Doug and Mildred Ramsey at positivepresentations.com part 6 communications series
Hello
Friends:This
month's topic, "The Seesaw of Good Conversation"......is
the 6th in our 7 part Super Supervisor communications series.
In
the Super Supervisor seminar, Mildred says, "Many bosses don't know the
meaning of of the word, "Communications"............ Communications
is an EXCHANGE of ideas, thoughts, and suggestions.......EXCHANGE is the key
word here.....If your idea of communications is for you to tell me what to do
and I go and do it. Hey! that's not communications, that's dictation!....That's
the kind of communications most bosses like!"
Super Supervisors, on the other hand, have learned to seesaw with the conversation.......and enjoy richer 2 way communications with the people in their world........We'll give you three tips........next issue "Self Talk"..........keeping it in the positive zone..."

Unbalanced conversation with people who talk too much (70% and up) is not nearly as productive as 50/50 conversation where each party contributes to the exchange. Ideas feed on one another and the whole is greater than the sum of each individual part...not to mention, the conversation is more interesting and enjoyable. Here are three tips to help you balance the conversation when talking with folks who either talk too much or too little. 1.
It is easier to get the people started talking than getting them to stop! But if you are unable to break in, don't get frustrated....just relax and listen. It helps to realize that the silent listener gains more than the blabbermouth talker .......as Wilson Mizner once said "“A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he gets to know something." 2.

Why 2 ears and one mouth? |
Why did God make us with 2 ears but only one mouth? God knew we would love to talk more than listen so he gave us two ears for listening and only one mouth for talking!
Q: What do you call a hippie's wife?
A: Mississippi.
The executive was
interviewing a young blonde for a position in his company. He wanted to find
out something about her personality so he asked, "If you could have a conversation
with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"
The blonde quickly responded, "The living one."
A family of mice were surprised by a big cat. Father Mouse jumped and and said, "Bow-wow!" The cat ran away. "What was that, Father?" asked Baby Mouse. "Well, son, that's why it's important to learn a second language."
The doctor to the patient: 'You are very sick'
The patient to the doctor: 'Can I get a second opinion?'
The doctor again: 'Yes, you are very ugly too...'
A teenage girl had been talking on the phone for about half an hour, and then
she hung up.
"Wow!," said her father, "That was short. You usually talk for
two hours. What happened?"
"Wrong number," replied the girl
An elementary school teacher sends this note to all parents on the first day of school. "If you promise not to believe everything your child says happens at school, I will promise not to believe everything your child says happens at home."

How
I made my boss my friend.......By Doug Ramsey. (I won a
Dale Carnegie award the night I told this little story.)
On a business trip to Mexico, My boss and I sat next to each other on the plane, and I was determined to get him to talk.
He was a seasoned HR manager and dealt with personal and confidential information so much he had a habit of talking very little.
I on the other hand always had plenty to say and usually our conversations went 75/25 with me doing most of the talking. Afterwards, I felt like a fool for talking so much not to mention short changed on learning anything. This had to stop.
He never talked much about his personal life so I asked him about that and as he talked, I listened carefully and tried not to interrupt, but instead encouraged him to go on. Things soon started getting interesting and listening required less and less effort. I found out some great things I never knew about my boss....eg.
He is in his second marriage, and they fell in love at first sight on an airplane.
He was an ex marine Captain of an Amtrack platoon (a boat for landing marines on the beach). Had a lot of interesting experiences at officers training in Quantico Virginia and Amtrack exercises at Guantanamo.
His Father died young and his mother, who had never been employed before, had to go to work to feed the family.
He was the first in his family to graduate from college. I could go on, but you get it.
I made a friend that night on the plane. I benefited greatly from drawing him out and balancing the conversation.
If you are like me and tend to talk too much, try cutting back to 50/50 and see if it works for you.
