A redneck filling out an employment application answered all the questions about his personal record, past employment, Insurance information, etc. down at the bottom was the inevitable question. Who to call incase of an emergency. He immediately put down 911.

A LESSON:"Good Will=Good Works".
| An employee has 3 dimensions to their personality. A Body, a Mind, and a Spirit. Their Body is what they are Doing, the Mind is what they are thinking, their Spirit is what they are feeling. The Cardinal Sin of Managers and superiors in their relationship with their subordinates is they only care about one dimension of them. They only care about what the subordinates are doing. Most managers couldn't care less about what they are thinking or how they are feeling.......They only have 1/3 of their subordinate's potential. Super Supervisors care about the Spirit (or Heart) and Mind of subordinates and activate their "Want To". ............resulting in good will in the workplace. |

Besides practicing the 7 c's, 3 R's and 2 A's of super supervising, here are a few specific suggestions to help Super Supervisors tap into employee potential and build good will.
- Mind/thinking:
Discuss issues facing the team and ask them to "Give this some thought".
Assign a new leadership responsibility (reduce costs, united fund, coffee club).
Ask for suggestions for making this a better place to work. - Heart/Feelings:
Show concern for family illnesses. (eg attend a funeral).
Publicly recognize an accomplishment (verbally or Give them and award).
Call them by their name.

How
a Simple Act created a lifetime of Good Will toward the company
A true story
During my long employment at J P Stevens textile company, I met the most hard working and loyal employee, I ever knew, her name was Sarah. We were in a union organizing campaign at the time and the organizers had "free access" to our canteens. One night an argument erupted between Sarah and an organizer when he loudly and emphatically announced that J P Stevens did not "Care" anything about their workers.
She got right in his face and shut him up in a hurry when she told how her first line supervisor had stood by during her husband long illness and death (about 2 years).
Seems he had come to the hospital two or three times to see her husband. He and his wife had come by her house one Sunday evening after church just to see how she was getting along. This supervisor had sent a cake to her house when her husband died and her house was full of people.
She put her forefinger in that organizer's face and loudly proclaimed, "Oh yes, this company does care something about us, too and you will organize this plant over my dead body!"
I wish every front line supervisor could have heard that little speech. It spoke volumes about their importance in a company or organization. She was judging a company with 83 plants and 144,000 employees at that time by ONE first line supervisor......WOW!!!
